{"id":1651,"date":"2017-11-06T08:15:32","date_gmt":"2017-11-06T08:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.wtransnet.com\/en\/?p=1651"},"modified":"2017-11-06T08:15:32","modified_gmt":"2017-11-06T08:15:32","slug":"are-new-transport-platforms-freight-exchanges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wtransnet.com\/en\/are-new-transport-platforms-freight-exchanges\/","title":{"rendered":"Are the new transport platforms that have appeared on the market really freight exchanges?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At a time when everyone\u2019s talking about <strong>collaborative economy, <\/strong>and in which there\u2019s no end to the emergence of new business models linked to <strong>digitalization<\/strong>, it\u2019s sometimes necessary to go back to the old precepts and identify each platform based on what it really offers.<\/p>\n<p>This article is all about analyzing the activity of classic <strong>freight exchanges<\/strong> such as <strong>Wtransnet<\/strong>, with respect to the <strong>new platforms<\/strong> that have emerged in recent months. It seems that their classification under the same umbrella is a mistake, given that both their objective as well as their business model and market niche are totally different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uber<\/strong> was the first to consolidate with a <strong>disruptive business model <\/strong>in which technology puts any kind of service within customers\u2019 reach with just one click. Both the immediacy of the delivery as well as the real-time monitoring were too tempting to not reach the <strong>logistics sector, <\/strong>which has been incorporating <strong>technology <\/strong>for over a decade to improve <strong>efficiency <\/strong>and <strong>sustainability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not surprising then that <strong>major investment groups<\/strong> have seen a business opportunity in transport on both sides of the Atlantic, the result being the birth of <strong>start-ups<em>,<\/em><\/strong> which put <strong>SMEs <\/strong>and <strong>independent transport professionals <\/strong>in touch to carry out regional transportation. Examples this include <strong>Cargomatic<\/strong> and <strong>Convoy <\/strong>in North America, <strong>Instafreight<\/strong> and <strong>LoadFox <\/strong>in Germany, <strong>Chronotruck<\/strong> in France and <strong>OnTruck <\/strong>in Spain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wtransnet.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/11\/new-transport-platforms-freight-exchanges.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1652\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wtransnet.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/11\/new-transport-platforms-freight-exchanges.jpg\" alt=\"new-transport-platforms-freight-exchanges\" width=\"500\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wtransnet.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/11\/new-transport-platforms-freight-exchanges.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blog.wtransnet.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/11\/new-transport-platforms-freight-exchanges-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the end, what all these platforms have in common is their specialization in low volume <strong>palletized goods<\/strong>, and their focus on <strong>regional <\/strong>or <strong>last mile transportation<\/strong>. And here is where the main difference between these and traditional freight exchanges lies. By definition, these are <strong>transport agencies<\/strong> given that, as well as having authorization for this, their operation is exactly the same as any other, except for the fact that all procedures are <strong>online<\/strong>. In the simplest terms, their procedure is based on receiving loads from <strong>freight companies<\/strong>, applying a fee which tends to be set and offering them to the <strong>independent transport professionals <\/strong>with whom they work.<\/p>\n<p>In this brief definition there are two <strong>concepts that are different <\/strong>to Wtransnet\u2019s business model, which we will expand upon throughout the article: <strong>loaders<\/strong> and <strong>prices<\/strong>. But let\u2019s go bit by bit.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>business model <\/strong>of this type of platform is based on <strong>intermediation<\/strong> between loads and lorries, for which a percentage is charged for management. To be clear, they act as any large <strong>logistics operator, <\/strong>whose business model is also based on <strong>subcontracting<\/strong>. Far from having their <strong>own lorry fleet <\/strong>with which they can respond to the large volumes of goods moved, they base their activity on collaboration with other <strong>transport companies <\/strong>and the <strong>independent drivers<\/strong> they subcontract. In any case, it is an <strong>intermediation<\/strong> that we don\u2019t find in freight exchanges, where a general fee is paid for contracting the service, and the objective of which is to match supply with demand, carrying out contracting outside the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Concerning <strong>loaders\u2019 <\/strong>access to the platform, in the case of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wtransnet.com\/\">Wtransnet<\/a>, which stands out as the only freight in the market that doesn\u2019t give access to the <strong>industry<\/strong>, CEO <strong>Jaume Esteve<\/strong> has already declared that <em>\u201cWe understand freight exchanges as a <strong>space for collaboration <\/strong><strong>between transport professionals with the aim of being able to give a better service to clients. The industry<\/strong> <strong>should not have access to the<\/strong> exchanges because the service is not designed for them\u201d<\/em>. He continued, \u201c<em>we do not claim to be the best exchange on the market, but we are the one most motivated by collaborative spirit, and in which the most important thing is the <strong>creation of long-term relationships <\/strong>and knowing beforehand that you are going to work with trustworthy companies<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wtransnet.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/11\/players-market-transport-goods-road.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1653\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wtransnet.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/11\/players-market-transport-goods-road.jpg\" alt=\"players-market-transport-goods-road\" width=\"500\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wtransnet.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/11\/players-market-transport-goods-road.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blog.wtransnet.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/11\/players-market-transport-goods-road-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>price<\/strong>. Another distinctive feature of these<strong> online transportation agencies<\/strong>. They publish offers with a <strong>set sales fee<\/strong>, so that the first transport professional who accepts the journey gets it. In contrast, neither Wtransnet nor other freight exchanges can set prices, according to article 101.1 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. According to this law, freight exchanges cannot oblige their users to respect <strong>minimum prices <\/strong>nor to publish them, and much less to exclude those that offer below-average prices from the platform.<\/p>\n<p>If we take a look at 21 years ago, when Wtransnet was born, we found ourselves with an <strong>imbalance in transport flows<\/strong>, where the <strong>reduction<\/strong> of <strong>empty mileage<\/strong> was key for the management of any transport company that wanted to survive in a very <strong>competitive market<\/strong>. This is why freight exchanges came into being, and why Wtransnet was born.
