On March, 4 Wtransnet took part in the conference called The efficient multimodal transport in Europe by the standards of FERRMED at the headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels.
FERRMED, the association for the promotion of the great rail freight axis Scandinavia-Rhine-Rhone-Western Mediterranean, raised the need to define a solid strategic logistics plan in Europe so that the transport of goods by road is more efficient and sustainable.
In Europe, logistics represents an average of 22% of the total cost of manufactured products, of which 50% goes to the external transport. A problem associated to this is the greenhouse gas emissions, which have increased remarkably in recent years. Therefore, the EU had set that in 2030 30% of the land transport is done by rail, being the target figure for 2050 of 50%. According to the multi-sectorial association based in Brussels, without an oriented strategic plan, the UE will be far below the targets set on environmental protection.
Ideally, a balance should exist between the flow of rail transport and road transport. To achieve this, FERRMED says it is essential to have an “Open Data” system with the information about all the transport: origin and destination, type of goods and means by which it is transported.
In this sense, Jaume Esteve, CEO of Wtransnet, pointed out during his speech at the convention that the flows of freights between the various European regions are not compensated as each region has different production capacities. This causes transport in Europe is inefficient because many trucks run without load back home.
Talking about regular routes, he pointed out that it is usual that a company from a region has more exit routes than routes back home. For example, it is possible that a company from Hamburg has 10 daily regular routes throughout the year with destination Lyon. The problem is that this company does not have 10 daily return loads from Lyon to Hamburg. Similarly happens to companies from Lyon that have a deficit of return loads from northern Germany.
The sad reality at present is that the trucks of these companies are crossed in the motorway returning empty to their places of origin, sentenced Jaume Esteve.
What is Wtransnet doing to solve this?
Wtransnet solution is really simple: we have created an online tool where the collaborative work is promoted, replied Jaume Esteve in his speech. We share information with companies that have daily routes to a destination and we show this to 10.000 European companies so that if there are companies doing the reverse route can contact each other to optimize their trips, concluded Esteve.
Wtransnet was founded in 1996 to help transport companies in their process of contracting loads through online applications. To this day, Wtransnet has 11.000 customers in 24 European countries and in Brazil. During the year 2013 more than 6 million of truck offers and more than 4 million of loads were published in this platform.
